Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 489)

This is a temporary skilled regional visa that offers a permanent residence pathway.

Extended Stay Pathway: You must hold not more than one of the following Subclass: 475, 487, 495 or 496 visa.

Invited Pathway:  You must be nominated by a state or territory government agency and live and work in that same state or territory; or be invited by an eligible relative in a regional or low population growth area.

Subsequent Entry Pathway:  You may be eligible to apply for this visa if your are a member of the family unit of the applicant who holds any one of the following Subclass 489,475,487, 495 or 496 visa.

Eligibility
  • You must have an occupation on the relevant occupation list
  • You must have achieved a positive skills assessment
  • You must meet the required mark of 60 points
  • You must be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
  • You must have competent English.
  • You must meet health and character requirements.
  • You must have no outstanding debts to the Australian government.
This visa allows you to:
  • stay in Australia for up to four years
  • unlimited overseas travel within the duration of your visa
  • Study, live and work in a specified area
  • apply for permanent residency, if eligible.
Location

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for this visa.

Sponsor obligations

Your sponsor must agree to help you settle in Australia with the rest of your family members.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

This visa allows you to work in Australia as a permanent resident.  This is a points-tested visa and you need to meet the minimum points required to be eligible for a visa.

Eligibility
  • Your occupation must be on the relevant occupation list
  • You must gain a positive skills assessment for you nominated occupation
  • You must meet the minimum 60 points pass mark
  • You must be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
  • You must have a Competent English
  • You must have been invited to apply for a visa
  • You must meet the health requirement
  • You must meet the character requirement
  • You must have no outstanding debts to the Australian government
This visa allows you to:
  • Stay in Australia as a permanent resident
  • Study and work in Australia
  • Have access to Medicare
  • Sponsor eligible relatives to come to Australia for a visit or permanent stay
  • Apply for citizenship if you are eligible.

  • Stay in Australia as a permanent resident
  • Study and work in Australia
  • Have access to Medicare
  • Sponsor eligible relatives to come to Australia for a visit or permanent stay
  • Apply for citizenship if you are eligible.
